MICROSOFT Bids to Acquire Catholic Church

VATICAN CITY (AP) — In a joint press conference in St. Peter’s Square this morning, MICROSOFT Corp. and the Vatican announced that the Redmond software giant will acquire the Roman Catholic Church in exchange for an unspecified number of shares of MICROSOFT common stock. If the deal goes through, it will be the first time a computer software company has acquired a major world religion.
With the acquisition, Pope John Paul II will become the senior vice-president of the combined company’s new Religious Software Division, while MICROSOFT senior vice-presidents Michael Maples and Steven Ballmer will be invested in the College of Cardinals, said MICROSOFT Chairman Bill Gates.
“We expect a lot of growth in the religious market in the next five to ten years,” said Gates. “The combined resources of MICROSOFT and the Catholic Church will allow us to make religion easier and more fun for a broader range of people.”
Through the MICROSOFT Network, the company’s new on-line service, “we will make the sacraments available on-line for the first time” and revive the popular pre-Counter-Reformation practice of selling indulgences, said Gates. “You can get Communion, confess your sins, receive absolution — even reduce your time in Purgatory — all without leaving your home.”
A new software application, MICROSOFT Church, will include a macro language which you can program to download “heavenly graces” automatically while you are away from your computer.
The deal grants MICROSOFT exclusive electronic rights to the Bible and the Vatican’s prized art collection, which includes works by such masters as Michelangelo and Da Vinci. But critics say MICROSOFT will face stiff challenges if it attempts to limit competitors’ access to these key intellectual properties.
“The Jewish people invented the look and feel of the holy scriptures,” said Rabbi David Gottschalk of Philadelphia. “You take the parting of the Red Sea — we had that thousands of years before the Catholics came on the scene.”
But others argue that the Catholic and Jewish faiths both draw on a common Abrahamic heritage. “The Catholic Church has just been more successful in marketing it to a larger audience,” notes Notre Dame theologian Father Kenneth Madigan. Over the last 2,000 years, the Catholic Church’s market share has increased dramatically, while Judaism, which was the first to offer many of the concepts now touted by Christianity, lags behind.
Historically, the Church has a reputation as an aggressive competitor, leading crusades to pressure people to upgrade to Catholicism, and entering into exclusive licensing arrangements in various kingdoms whereby all subjects were instilled with Catholicism, whether or not they planned to use it. Today Christianity is available from several denominations, but the Catholic version is still the most widely used. The Church’s mission is to reach “the four corners of the earth,” echoing MICROSOFT’s vision of “a computer on every desktop and in every home”.
Gates described MICROSOFT’s long-term strategy to develop a scalable religious architecture that will support all religions through emulation. A single core religion will be offered with a choice of interfaces according to the religion desired — “One religion, a variety of different implementations,” said Gates.
The MICROSOFT move could spark a wave of mergers and acquisitions, according to Herb Peters, a spokesman for the U.S. Southern Baptist Conference, as other churches scramble to strengthen their position in the increasingly competitive religious market.

For those who always skip breakfast, you should stop that habit now!
You’ve heard many times that “Breakfast is the most important meal of the
day.” Now, recent research confirms that one of the worst practices you
can develop may be avoiding breakfast.
Why?
Because the frequency of heart attack, sudden death, and stroke peaks
between 6: 00a.m. and noon, with the highest incidence being
between 8: 00a.m. and 10:00a.m.What mechanism within the body could
account for this significant jump in sudden death in the early
morning hours?

Platelet, tiny elements in the blood that keep us from bleeding to Death
if we get a cut, can clump together inside our arteries due to
cholesterol or laque buildup in the artery lining. It is in the morning
hours that platelets become the most activated and tend to form these
internal blood clots at the greatest frequency.
However, eating even a very light breakfast prevents the morning platelet
activation that is associated with heart attacks and strokes. Studies
performed at Memorial University in St.Johns, Newfoundland found that
eating a light, very low-fat breakfast was critical in modifying the
morning platelet activation. Subjects in the study consumed either low-fat
or fat-free yogurt, orange juice, fruit, and a source of protein coming
from yogurt or fat-free milk. So if you skip breakfast, it’s important
that you change this practice immediately in light of this research.
Develop a simple plan to eat cereal, such as oatmeal or Bran Flakes, along
with six ounces of grape juice or orange juice, and perhaps a piece of
fruit. This simple plan will keep your platelets from sticking together,keep blood clots from forming, and perhaps head off a potential Heart
Attack or stroke.

Maha Nirvana, or enlightenment, is the true salvation where your soul is freed from being subjected to further bodily incarnations and it finally becomes an eternal part of the universal soul.
Our bodies are the physical manifestation of this cosmic energy and our minds are its intelligence. We should always use both to ultimately benefit the Universal soul and not to harm it. Our bodies and minds should be kept as healthy as possible through yoga exercises and other beneficial means. This will enable us to concentrate on the cleansing of our souls and reaching Maha Nirvana.
Of course, the link between a healthy body and a healthy mind has long been recognized. If you firmly believe that they are intrinsically connected then it is not unreasonable to take that a step further and link the workings of a person\’s body and their state of mind with the level of enlightenment that their soul has reached.

Chores, not leisure, tied to older men’s fall risk . Household activities undertaken by elderly men appear to have more to do with their risk of suffering a fall than the activities they pursue in their leisure time, a new study shows.
Such household activities may include potentially risky tasks such as clearing rain gutters, pruning trees, or shoveling snow and ice, Benjamin K. S. Chan of Oregon Health and Science University in Portland and colleagues point out. “If community-dwelling older adults lack alternative resources for assistance, be it financial (to pay someone to do such tasks) or social (a nearby able-bodied relative or friend), they may put themselves at risk of falling by attempting to complete such tasks themselves,” Chan and his team note in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
The researchers followed 5,995 men 65 and older who were living independently to identify factors associated with their risk of falling.
The most active men were significantly more likely to fall than their more sedentary peers. While there was no association between leisure time activity and fall risk, the men who reported spending the most time on household activities were at increased risk of falling compared to those who did the least around the house.
Chan and his colleagues also found that men with the strongest grip strength and strongest legs were the least likely to suffer falls.
A study of osteoporotic fractures in women found that those with the least family support were at greater risk of falls, the researchers note. These findings “suggested that maintaining or increasing contacts with family may reduce fall risk, possibly because of increased support with everyday activities, decreased risk taking, and specific education about risks,” they add. “Our data corroborate this finding and suggest intervention strategies for future studies.”

The F.D.A. ordered the makers of Ambien, Lunesta and 11 other commonly used sleep medications to issue strong new label warnings about those risks, and to produce brochures about safe use of the drugs. Pharmacies would give the brochures to patients when prescriptions are dispensed.
The agency will also require label warnings to note the possibility of severe allergic reactions and facial swelling associated with the use of such sleep medications.
The agency had been reviewing the side effects of sleeping pills since last year, after some users of the widely prescribed drug Ambien complained that they sleepwalked and gorged themselves on food or were arrested while driving in their sleep.
In each case the consumers had no recollection of the events, which occurred after they took Ambien and headed for bed.
The agency said that it had reviewed its database of reports of problems with the 13 commonly used sleep medications and concluded that labeling changes were needed. In a news release today, the F.D.A. warned patients of the potential for “complex sleep-related behaviors” which may include “sleep-driving, making phone calls and preparing and eating food (while asleep).”
The release defined “sleep driving” as “driving while not fully awake after ingestion of a sedative hypnotic, with no memory of the event.”
The F.D.A. also said it was taking the added step of asking manufacturers to conduct additional clinical studies involving sleep driving and other complex behaviors associated with taking the medications.
Besides Ambien and Lunesta, the drugs include Sonata and Rozerem, and a number of older medications.
The F.D.A.’s move follows a warning last month by authorities in Australia, where Ambien is marketed as Stilnox. The Australian drug agency said it had uncovered a variety of unusual activities by consumers using the product, including sleep-driving, sleep-eating, and, in one case, a woman who painted the front door of her home while asleep.

LONDON (Reuters) - They are flirtatious, love to target older men, and are weighed down with designer accessories and within minutes of meeting a man want to know his bank balance.
Watch out! Toxic Wife Syndrome is rampant and droves of gold diggers are prowling in search of rich prey to join the tribe.
So says journalist Tara Winter Wilson whose guide to spotting a potential toxic wife touched a raw nerve with hordes of victims contacting her about the so-called syndrome.
Her warning is stark: “Unless you marry an equal who is going to pay her own way, you will end up with a lazy, indulgent, over-pampered slug.”
“Marriage is being clouded by Toxic Wife Syndrome. Ridiculous amounts of money keep being awarded to these women in divorce settlements.”
Winter Wilson, staggered by the flood of heartfelt feedback she got after first naming the syndrome in a lifestyle article for the Daily Telegraph newspaper, said: “Many women see it as a career choice.”
“After leaving university, they stay on the party circuit until they trap someone. They try to get the most by doing the least. They develop an extraordinary sense of entitlement, becoming very judgmental and shrewish,” she told Reuters.
She said she had hate mail from women who accused her of being a misogynist who also betrayed feminism.
Stoutly defending her stand, Winter Wilson argued: “The toxic wife is a complete disservice to women. It does us no favors. Stay-at-home mothers should be applauded not reviled.”
“I think the stigma of being at home and looking after children should be taken away. The toxic wife thinks she is above it all. It makes me burn with anger.”
She was prompted into print after a young male banker approached her at a party and “whispered that I would be doing a good service if I could write about the high maintenance wife scenario.”
The danger signals of a wife going toxic are all too plain:
– She gives up work to care for the children and then sends them to boarding schools as soon as they outgrow their nannies.
– She demands wall-to-wall help with a maid hired to work up to 14 hours a day six days a week.
– Cooking and housework are strictly out of bounds.
– They have to live in a country mansion, forcing the husband to commute daily to London.
“I have had feedback from readers around the world recognizing the syndrome. In America, many people wrote in about their toxic wives,” she said.
So, does she practice what she preaches?
“I married for love but sadly am divorced. I pay my ex-husband one pound a year in alimony and he pays me one pound. We have two children. I have them one week and he then has them one week. They are unbelievably sane, happy and confident.”
