NEW YORK (Reuters Health) -

Chores, not leisure, tied to older men’s fall risk . Household activities undertaken by elderly men appear to have more to do with their risk of suffering a fall than the activities they pursue in their leisure time, a new study shows.
Such household activities may include potentially risky tasks such as clearing rain gutters, pruning trees, or shoveling snow and ice, Benjamin K. S. Chan of Oregon Health and Science University in Portland and colleagues point out. “If community-dwelling older adults lack alternative resources for assistance, be it financial (to pay someone to do such tasks) or social (a nearby able-bodied relative or friend), they may put themselves at risk of falling by attempting to complete such tasks themselves,” Chan and his team note in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
The researchers followed 5,995 men 65 and older who were living independently to identify factors associated with their risk of falling.

The most active men were significantly more likely to fall than their more sedentary peers. While there was no association between leisure time activity and fall risk, the men who reported spending the most time on household activities were at increased risk of falling compared to those who did the least around the house.

Chan and his colleagues also found that men with the strongest grip strength and strongest legs were the least likely to suffer falls.

A study of osteoporotic fractures in women found that those with the least family support were at greater risk of falls, the researchers note. These findings “suggested that maintaining or increasing contacts with family may reduce fall risk, possibly because of increased support with everyday activities, decreased risk taking, and specific education about risks,” they add. “Our data corroborate this finding and suggest intervention strategies for future studies.”

GOOGLE says web not built for handling TV

Google Managers are making the case that the internet is not made for distributing of full-length video. Large cable companies appear to agree.

The argument is that the internet does not scale enough to handle the traffic loads being built by the services like Joost and You Tube, the service for peer-to-peer TV shortly being started by Skype founders.

Google expression of the problem doesn’t appear to be specific to yield much information of how much more loads the internet can bear. To illustrate the point, Reuters reports that one hour of video contains about the same amount of data as one year’s worth of e-mail.

Google offered to associate with cable operators and combine it’s technology for searching the TV and video footage and it’s tailor made advertisements with cable networks very high quality delivery of shows.

Cable operators find this as good news of today that Google can’t scale for video .

WORLD DIABETES CAPITAL TO FIGHT WITH ORAL VACCINES

India is on the threshold of launching an oral vaccine for diabetes that would replace the current practice of insulin injections, promising relief to millions in the country suffering from the debilitating health condition.
The Andra Pradesh-based pharmaceutical company Transgene Biotek Ltd is currently doing research and pre-clinical trials of the vaccine in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad.
“We have made considerable progress in the drug development process. The new vaccine will be administered in liquid form,” Prakash V. Diwan, chief of pharmacology of IICT, told IANS.
Diwan, however, said they would not like to divulge details about the development. “It’s too early to give further details.”
With nearly 40 million diabetes patients, India is home to over 20 percent of the total cases worldwide. Experts believe that given the changing lifestyles, the disease could take on an endemic status soon.
Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss had told IANS earlier that pre-clinical trials of the oral vaccine were at an advanced stage and “by the second half of 2008 there will be some reason to smile”.
The oral insulin vaccine has shown a reduction in blood glucose levels comparable to that of the injectable insulin, officials said. Once taken, the benefits would persist for almost 24 hours and help in better management of diabetes.
However, experts involved in the research said they would go for a “toxicological test” of the drug in “animal mammals because of the safety factor”.
“The clinical trial will have two phases - in phase one the drug would be tested on animal mammals and on phase two on humans. Nearly 200 to 250 mammals of two separate categories would be put under the toxicological test,” said a researcher associated with the new vaccine, requesting he not be named.
In the second phase, the drug would be tested on at least 20 humans. “Once successful, the drug would be tried on around 100 patients from different parts of India and probably from some European country. It would help in containing the disease faster and more effectively. The cost of treatment would also go down as the drug would be an indigenous product,” the researcher explained

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 180 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes. Nearly 1.1 million succumbed to the disease in 2005. Almost 80 percent of diabetes deaths occur in low and middle-income countries, the UN body said.
Diabetes, which can lead to several complications like kidney failure, gangrene in the leg leading to amputations, heart problem and skin related problems, is growing at the rate of over 50 percent in India, say officials. In India, the mortality rate is over five percent of the total number of cases reported every year.
Anoop Mishra of the Fortis Group of Hospitals said an oral vaccine would greatly help patients. “It would make the treatment process easier and help in containing the disease,” said Mishra, director and head of the department of diabetes at Fortis.
“Indians are genetically predisposed to such ailments. And when they change their food habits the chance of being affected by diabetes and heart problems increases. A lot of children are now turning diabetic,” Mishra added.
According to one estimate, a diabetes patient spends nearly Rs.15,000 on treatment a year. If the problem leads to other health related problems, the amount rises four-fold. The loss of working hours also results in revenue loss

Today’s life styles present great stress challenges, every new challenges

having ingredients of stress built in it . There are different challenges in

every field. Mostly Human Beings experience fear of the unknown.

This in itself is a big challenge and causes great stress. Confront the fear

and fear vanishes.

Remember that the brain does not distinguish between imagination

and reality, it is very important not visualize negativism .

Negativities don’t exist and they are only absences.

Clouds darkness and fears etc are absences. Don’t follow them.

The only essences are light and sound. We all Human Beings are light

and sound vibrating and dancing energy children of the Universe Soul.

Enjoy the essence and have great fun life.

Remedies for all kinds of stress real or imaginary –

Dance and dance on the music of your choice preferably on great spiritual

music and tire yourself but to the level of comfort you have .

Laugh and laugh amidst worries and laugh louder and louder.

Only be sure that you are light on stomach or may be slightly empty stomach.

The venom of stress or depression will be thrown out.

Breathe and breathe deeply as deeply as you can to your comfort levels.

Do belly breathing then relax and watch your breath’s awareness . Awareness is

a great fire energy capable of destroying the thoughts and bring you in a

state of tranquil and present moment.

Enjoy the present moment and stay there as long as you want.

Sit or lie down is your choice, this is a Universal Plane and in deep

relaxation you can give positive instructions to your mind and repeat these.

The above exercise can be repeated in the day depending upon your physical

energy. Please don’t over do. As far as laughing is concerned you can keep

smiling, laughing any time. Live in the present moment that is now.

Kick the stress out of your lives and live life king size with your

dreams, ambitions and goals . Create a wonderful world of Happiness ,

Abundance and Affluence around your self and make the world a better

place to live.
