Who’s insane idea is it that the whole world has to wake up at the crack of dawn just get started being productive to society?
Since I was a little boy there has always been some person somewhere telling me that I need to wake up early so I can get a jump on the day. What does that even mean? Why can’t I get a jump on the day if I start at noon? Honestly, when I follow the grand advice of waking at the crack of dawn, I totally feel like the day has gotten the jump on me.
Finally, when I became self-employed I tested this theory. With no more boss yelling and whining about the pillow head marks that I brought to the job with me in my effort to squeeze in a few more minutes of sleep before jumping out of the bed and running out the door with crusted toothpaste still in the corners of my mouth, I started my work days a 10:00 am.
This is the magic number for me. I can wake up at 9:00 am instead of 6:00am, and what a huge difference it makes in my mood and my level of productivity. For me, there seems to be no difference as to the time I go to sleep. If I goto sleep at 9:00pm or midnight or even later I still find that my magic time is 9:00am and you know what? The same work that was waiting for me to wake and do it at 6:00am is still there at 9:00am. By this way of thinking, what’s the hurry?
For me, this is the best part of being self employed. I take a wierd pleasure in having a customer ask “Can you be here at 7:00 am?”, just so I can say “I’m sorry but our first open appointment is at 10:00am.” I find that a lot of people are actually pleased to find that I will not be there so early which means that they can also have a little time to chill before I show up to fix their broken stuff.
If you are self employed or have a flexible boss maybe you should give it try. It sure helped me to have a different and better view of the world.
